It seems like students everywhere are looking for the time saving option of taking online classes. When it comes to online CNA courses, there is only so much you can do without actually visiting a setting that will expose you to live patient interactions. After all, a career in nursing is all about helping people who are in need of care and special assistance. It requires compassion, top-notch communication skills, and relationship building that just cannot be replicated in and online course. While it is true that CNA training is heavy in basic medical concepts, healthcare vocabulary, and standards, there will always be a portion of the process that must involve practicing and demonstrating important skills on the job.
With that being said, most certified nursing assistant training programs offer some scheduling flexibility that allows students to complete some of the work in an online environment. The good news is that the CNA certification process can usually be completed within a few weeks and does not require a significant investment of time on the part of the student. Most programs offer class times that include evenings and weekends so that courses can be scheduled around an existing job. The first step is to find a school near you and complete an application. The pre-requisites for becoming a certified nursing assistant are fairly minor; in most cases it does not even require a high school diploma or GED. Most states do require that applicants have a clean criminal record with no history of felony convictions. This is usually verified by completing a fingerprint card that is used to run a background check.
Once you have found a program in your area and registered for classes, the next step is to pay a small application fee to the state where you intend to practice. This fee varies by state and typically covers the cost of the background check and taking the CNA exam. Practice tests and sample questions are available for free on a number of different websites. It is recommended that graduates spend some time working with practice test questions to develop a comfort level with the types of questions they are likely to encounter on the test. Upon completion of a state-approved training program, students become eligible to schedule the certification exam. Students can arrange to take the exam at any time within the first 12-18 months after completing the education requirements.
After passing the exam, an individual then becomes eligible to be added to an official list of CNAs. Potential employers will use this information to verify that a job applicant has the proper credentials to work in the field. With a little experience, certified nursing assistants often go on to become medical assistants or nurses. Remember that sites offering to provide 100% online CNA courses are not providing you with the complete picture. Start by requesting information from recognizable technical schools or community colleges in your area. The school faculty will be able to provide detailed information about how classes can be taken and which ones require time to be spent in a clinical setting.
